Murkowski Announces She Will Not Vote For Betsy DeVos As Secretary Of Education
US Senator Lisa Murkowski announced Wednesday that she will not support the appointment of Betsy DeVos, President Trump's pick for Secretary of Education.
On Tuesday, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions voted twice to approve DeVos, in a close vote of 12 to 11.
That vote was to move DeVos forward into a full Senate vote on her appointment.
Senator Murkowski voted within the committee to approve the Michigan billionaire on Tuesday, but noted "She has not yet earned my full support... I would not advise yet that she count on my vote."
Murkowski said her office has been receiving many calls and emails from Alaskans raising concerns over the possible nomination of DeVos, a candidate with no previous experience in education.
"I have heard from thousands, truly thousands, of Alaskans who shared their concerns."
In a Wednesday morning speech on the Senate floor, Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski both announced their decisions to vote against the confirmation of DeVos.
Murkowski noted, "I have serious concerns about a nominee to be Secretary of Education... who has been so immersed in the discussion of vouchers"
"I do not intend to vote on final passage to support Ms. Devos to be secretary of Education" Murkowski said.
